The Sexy Secret Of A Sapphire

Even gemstones have hidden secrets they don’t like being publicized much. You’d think that after centuries in the limelight, almost everything to know about these simple stones would be out there in the open, but that hasn’t been the case - until now.
Sapphires

Sapphires for example, have always liked to consider themselves the perfect blue gem. It’s about time though that they come out of the jewelry box and stand proud. Sapphires are not just blue.

Pink Sapphire

Much like the changing color of fall leaves, Sapphires sparkle in a palette of colors from blue to pink, yellow to green and all the colors in-between. There are even colorless Sapphires that appear almost identical to diamonds yet are much less expensive.

Gemstones in the Corundum Group

Sapphires and their estranged gem relatives are both members of gem family called Corundum. It’s not a family you’d want to mess with in a dark alley. Members of the Corundum group are known for their extraordinary hardness (9 on the Mohs scale). Indeed their hardness is exceeded only by that of the diamond - and the diamond is the hardest mineral on Earth. Thanks to that hardness, sapphires are easy to look after, requiring no more than the usual care on the part of the wearer.

For thousands of years, Sapphires were hunted far and wide as the ultimate blue gemstone. The ancient Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire that gave its blue reflection to the sky, hence the Latin name "sapphiru", which means blue.

The gem has long symbolized faith, remembrance, and enduring commitment. According to tradition, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire, making it the most sacred stone. This supposed "divine favor" is why sapphires often were the gem of choice for kings and high priests throughout history. In fact, the British Crown Jewels contain a number of notable sapphires. Prince Charles even gave Princess Diana a sapphire engagement ring.

But back to Sapphire’s sexy secret. The only color that Sapphire doesn’t come in is red. There is a red member of that ultra-hard Corundum family. But it isn’t called a Sapphire. It prefers to go by the name ‘Ruby’.

What To Remember When Buying Gold Jewelry

Jewelry fashion is dynamic. Jewelers are always coming up with new designs and new materials from which jewelry can be fashioned. Even stunning pieces of jewelry may lose their popularity after a few years. Gold jewelry however is always in fashion. Jewelry collectors and even simple wearers like gold because it is beautiful and long lasting. Gold does not discolor because it almost never reacts with any other material. Rarely is someone allergic to gold so it always a good choice to go for gold.

When you are considering buying gold jewelry, you have to be familiar with the terminologies used. The purity of gold is measured in karats and the mark on the ring indicating this is a number followed by K (such as 24K, 18K, 12K). K stands for karat. 24K is pure gold. 18K is a mixture of 18 parts gold and 6 parts of a metal or a mixture of metals, making 18K 75% gold. 14K is 14 parts gold and 10 parts of a metal or a mixture of metals, making it 58.3% gold. The percentage of gold for 12K and 10K jewelries is also computed in the same way. In the United States, 10K is the minimum karat used in gold jewelries. Europe marks its gold jewelry differently. When the jewelry is 18K, it is marked 750 in Europe, indicating that it is 75% gold. 14K jewelry is marked 583 and 12K, 500, for 58.3% and 50% respectively.

Most gold jewelries should have a mark identifying its maker. This is really helpful when choosing your jewelry pieces. You might consider doing your research on gold jewelers before purchasing any jewelry. This way, you have a basic idea on jewelers that you prefer. If the piece you’re considering doesn’t have a trademark, it is better to look for another one.

Gold is not always alloyed with other metals. Sometimes it is just used as a coating for a base metal. Gold filled jewelries have a layer of karat gold wrapped around a base metal. The base metal used may vary. The gold content should be indicated on the piece such as 1/20 12K G.F. This indicates that the jewelry is 1/20th 12K gold by weight. Gold overlay and rolled gold plate are also terms used to indicate that a layer of gold (a minimum of 10 karats) is electronically bonded to a base metal. Abbreviations such as 12K Gold Overlay or 14K RGP indicates the percentage of gold used and the process of binding the gold to the metal. Gold plated jewelries are also available and the coating is usually thinner than in gold – filled jewelries so they easily fade.

When buying gold jewelry choose solid gold (even alloys are called solid gold) when you intend to wear it frequently. Gold-filled and gold-plated jewelries should be considered when they are only to be worn occasionally.

New Zealand

I'm back from my trip to New Zealand, it's such a beautiful country. I do get homesick for the green grass and all those hills! Perth is so flat in comparison. Here's a couple of photos taken 5 minutes walk from my Aunty and Uncle's house in Masterton (thought I'd share some cows instead of the usual sheep!):

And here's my handsome Grandpa Bertie:

He is 93 but looks much younger. He is still living at home on his own!

All my photos while I was away (hundreds of them) were taken on my new toy, the delicious Leica D-Lux 3 , an awesome compact camera with 10 megapixels, 2.8 inch 16:9 widescreen, ability to shoot RAW, Leica's retro styling and so much more!

Isn't it cute? I had to buy the gorgeous 1960s style brown leather case for it.

Amber and I are headed down south this afternoon for the annual Fuji Breakaway at Bunker Bay. It's an awesome conference for photographers in a beautiful setting. The office will be closed until Friday when we will resume regular hours. I look forward to catching up with all of you then.

Aiden's Mate Sean

This is Aiden's mate Sean from mum's group. He's the first of the mum's group babies I've got my hands on for photos, they are all so cute. He's also the first to start crawling out of the group. Check out those eyelashes!

This one we'll save for their 21st birthdays. Sean loves touching everything including other babies.

My little man Aiden having a bad hair day. Will have to teach him how to use gel.

I love being a mum but also love my job so I'm blessed being able to manage both at the same time. Thanks must go to my fantastic husband Art who's at home with Aiden today AND cleaning the house (we hope).

McDreamy Wedding

So Grey's Anatomy may be over for this season, but never fear. Here is your latest fix with all the details of Kate Walsh's (aka Addison) McDreamy Wedding held on 1 September.

Less than four months after getting engaged, last Saturday Kate Walsh married movie executive Alex Young. Walsh, 39, wore a custom-made Monique Lhuillier wedding gown as she and Young, 36, exchanged vows at the Ojai Presbyterian Church just north of Los Angeles. Among the about 100 guests were Grey's co-stars Katherine Heigl, Chandra Wilson, Sara Ramirez and Justin Chambers, as well as the show's creator Shonda Rhimes. Also attending were actress Kate Beckinsale and her director husband Len Wiseman.

A lavish reception followed at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa's Casa Elar, a Spanish-style estate where guests enjoyed a sit-down dinner. Wedding planner Jo Gartin of Love Luck and Angels had decorated the estate with hundreds of candles for an intimate atmosphere.

Walsh met Young, a production co-president at 20th Century Fox, in February and they were engaged three months later. "I know – I'm literally living the dream," Walsh said at the time. "But you know when you know. I was not expecting it, so it's kind of amazing." Walsh is now starring in a Grey's spinoff called Private Practice.
